FSSAI Registration Services In Salem India

Scope and evidence must be confirmed before any paid tests or filings.

FSSAI registration in Salem is a national food-business permission applied to a real operating premises, not a distinct Salem licence. Start with the location, the Kind of Business (KoB) and its turnover; only then choose registration, State licence or Central licence.

The 2026 changes are material. Older Salem service pages may still show the former ₹12 lakh / ₹20 crore bands. For a new application on or after 1 April 2026, use the revised FSSAI sources below, not those superseded figures.

What Salem changes—and what it does not

An operating site in Salem must be entered under its actual Tamil Nadu premises in the national FoSCoS workflow. Tamil Nadu’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department handles State food-safety oversight; FSSAI continues to handle cases assigned to Central jurisdiction. The March 2026 reform explicitly did not change the jurisdiction of licensing or registering authorities.

The Salem district administration lists a Designated Officer (Food Safety), with landline 0427-2450332. Its separate directory pages show inconsistent mobile numbers, so verify contact details before visiting. This is a district-level contact for clarification, not a separate Salem application portal or a promise that every case will be decided by that officer.

Route table for common Salem business models

Use this as a triage table, not as an automatic approval decision. Confirm the exact KoB in the FSSAI eligibility matrix; a turnover threshold alone is not sufficient for every activity.

For instance, a ₹40 lakh Salem restaurant and a ₹40 lakh Salem event caterer should not automatically submit the same application. KoB is a decisive input.

Manufacturer warning for Salem: a grain, cereal or pulse milling unit falls under the State-licence line regardless of turnover in the April 2026 FoSCoS matrix; proprietary-food and nutraceutical manufacturing lines are shown under Central licensing irrespective of turnover. Before choosing a registration route, identify the actual product category and manufacturing activity—not just revenue. These are national KoB distinctions, not Salem-specific rules.

Salem filing packet: information to reconcile first

Prepare one reconciled record for the actual Salem operating premises. The following is a preparation checklist, not a claim that every item is mandatory in every application.

  • Premises: full address, district, sub-district and PIN code; confirm consistency with lease, ownership or other premises evidence.
  • Business: legal operator name, contact details, every actual KoB (preparation, retail, manufacture, storage, catering, imports) and product categories when relevant.
  • Financial basis: actual or supportable expected annual turnover, plus a note explaining which operation and premises the figure covers.
  • Registration documents: applicant photograph, government photo identification and, where the business address differs from that ID, business-address proof under the official registration document list. For a licence, check the KoB-specific FoSCoS list before collecting further evidence.
  • Special status: existing FSSAI number, previous queries or modifications, other-State premises, and a valid Street Vendors Act registration if claiming deemed status.

Do not upload an unrelated shop address merely because a consultant is located there. Certificate details must correspond to the genuine food-business premises.

File through FoSCoS, then track the authority

  1. Open the official FoSCoS portal and choose a new application for the location of operation; select Tamil Nadu and the correct district/premises.
  2. Use the current KoB eligibility tool and distinguish registration from State/Central licensing before selecting Form A or Form B.
  3. Enter the operator, site, activities, turnover and required evidence; check the preview for spelling and address inconsistencies.
  4. Pay the applicable government fee through the official workflow and preserve the application reference and receipt; track queries in the portal.
  5. After issuance, verify the certificate details and endorsed activities against actual operations; use FoSCoS modification functions if relevant facts later change.

For portal access problems use the FoSCoS helpdesk (1800-11-2100; helpdesk-foscos@fssai.gov.in). For district-level questions, use the verified Salem landline above; do not send fees or credentials to an unofficial contact.

What a Salem filing adviser can and cannot do

A private service provider is optional. Make the engagement deliverables explicit and separate government charges from professional fees.

A quotation promising guaranteed approval, a special “Salem FSSAI fee”, or a fixed statutory turnaround should be treated cautiously. For the wider national filing process, see FSSAI registration services across India.

2026 validity, government fees and changes

For new applicants from 1 April 2026, the national turnover bands are registration up to ₹1.5 crore, State licence above ₹1.5 crore up to ₹50 crore, and Central licence above ₹50 crore, subject to the relevant KoB-specific route. The March order did not relocate licensing jurisdiction.

FSSAI describes licences and registrations issued from 1 April 2026 as having perpetual validity unless suspended, cancelled or surrendered. This removes ordinary periodic renewal, not hygiene, inspection, modification or fee obligations. Its FAQ says fees may be paid for any chosen number of years and at any time of year.

Examples from the April 2026 official KoB matrix: restaurant registration ₹100 per annum, restaurant State licence ₹5,000 per annum, and Central licence ₹7,500 per annum; a qualifying itinerant hawker has a waived registration fee. The actual charge varies by activity and category. Private adviser charges are separate.

For existing certificates affected by turnover migration, FSSAI says migration is based on self-declarations in FoSCoS, with no modification fee for that migration and no change to the certificate number. Confirm the live account status; ordinary changes to business details still use the normal modification process.

Perpetual validity is not a fee or return exemption. Under amended regulation 2.1.7(2), failure to pay the applicable annual registration/licence fee, or to file a required return by its due date, results in deemed suspension. No food business may be conducted during that suspension; check payment and filing status in FoSCoS, even if the certificate displays no expiry date. The amended rule also provides for lifting the suspension after the relevant annual fee is paid or the overdue return is submitted with the applicable penalty, as the case may be; verify the account status before resuming operations.

If the Salem food business closes, amended regulation 2.1.7(3) requires written notice to the competent registering/licensing authority and surrender of the certificate or licence within 30 days of closure. Fees already paid are not refundable on surrender.

Decisions this page cannot make for you

A Salem address does not establish that every activity qualifies for simple registration. Catering, imports, multi-State operations and particular product categories can change the route. The status of a street-food vendor also depends on an actual qualifying registration under the 2014 Act, not merely selling from a cart.

FSSAI permission does not itself establish compliance with any other permission that may apply to the site (for example, local trade, premises or municipal requirements). Check those with the relevant authority separately.

A consultant’s payment receipt or submitted form does not by itself establish approval. The 2011 registration/licensing procedures include limited commencement rules if an authority has not decided within prescribed periods; those depend on precise conditions and should be checked against the current rules and case facts before starting without a certificate.

Salem-specific questions

Can a Salem home kitchen use the restaurant registration route?

Possibly, but only after identifying the actual KoB, activities and turnover in FoSCoS. A home kitchen providing event catering should not assume it is a restaurant merely because food is prepared at home.

Do I submit the FSSAI application at the Salem district office?

New applications are initiated through the national FoSCoS portal. The district Designated Officer is a published local contact for queries; the competent authority depends on the selected route.

Is every Salem food business under ₹1.5 crore eligible for registration?

No. The revised turnover band is the starting point, not a universal exception. The 2026 KoB list shows, for example, caterers taking a State licence up to ₹50 crore and importers taking a Central licence irrespective of turnover.

Can one Salem certificate cover a second kitchen in Karnataka?

Do not presume so. FoSCoS describes permission by premises and a Central head-office licence for an operator with business activities in two or more States/UTs; map each location first.

Does a Salem street vendor with a 2014 Act certificate need duplicate FSSAI registration?

The 2026 FSSAI FAQ provides deemed registration for vendors already registered under that Act. Verify that the actual certificate qualifies; Schedule 4 hygiene obligations continue.
