FSSAI Registration Services In Chennai India

Scope and evidence must be confirmed before any paid tests or filings.

Start with the Chennai premises, not a supposed city licence

A food business operating in Chennai follows India’s FSSAI rules, not a separate Chennai FSSAI statute. Begin with the actual operating premises, what food activity occurs there, and the legal operator. Tamil Nadu’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department administers state-side functions; some activities fall under central jurisdiction.

Select the national category before choosing the authority

For new applications from 1 April 2026, FSSAI raised the ordinary turnover thresholds. The figures below are a screening tool, not a substitute for choosing the correct Kind of Business (KoB) on FoSCoS. Older FSSAI pages and commercial guides may still display the superseded ₹12 lakh threshold.

Indicative annual turnover Ordinary route Caution
Up to ₹1.5 crore Registration Only when the selected KoB is eligible
Above ₹1.5 crore to ₹50 crore State licence Tamil Nadu authority for eligible activities
Above ₹50 crore Central licence Central licensing jurisdiction
Any turnover, special KoB Check KoB-specific rule E.g. importer: Central licence

Certain KoBs override the turnover shortcut: the revised official eligibility schedule places importers and specified products/activities under Central licensing even at low turnover. Check the exact KoB and product before paying. The 13 March 2026 order did not change the territorial jurisdiction of registering or licensing authorities.

Chennai jurisdiction and location decision matrix

A Chennai address alone is not enough to identify the officer. The Tamil Nadu department publishes a Food Safety Officer directory searchable by Chennai Corporation locality/ward and separate state contact information; directory entries can change. Match the operating address and district recorded in FoSCoS, rather than relying on a consultant’s claimed “Chennai office”.

Actual operating situation Safe next check
Within Chennai Corporation wards Confirm ward/address, then consult the Tamil Nadu FSO directory and FoSCoS jurisdiction selection.
Chennai postal address near the urban fringe Verify the actual administrative district from premises evidence; do not assume Chennai district.
Railway, airport or seaport premises Check the relevant special-location path on FoSCoS before selecting General.
Two premises or operations in different states Map each premises; FoSCoS states separate premises credentials generally apply, with a central head-office rule for multi-state FBOs.

Prepare a premise-specific evidence pack

Before submitting, reconcile the business name, actual site, authorised signatory and activities. Documents depend on whether the submission is registration, non-manufacturing licence or manufacturing licence; do not upload a factory layout just because it appears in a generic checklist.

For basic registration, FoSCoS lists a photograph, government-issued photo identity and business-address proof when that address differs from the identity document. Licence applicants should check the live KoB-specific FoSCoS document list; processing/manufacturing can require layout, equipment and product-category details.

  • Legal operator and authorised contact; name consistent across the application and records.
  • Complete premise address, postcode, administrative district and evidence of occupancy.
  • Accurate KoB list: for example preparation, retail, storage, delivery and/or import as actually conducted.
  • Turnover estimate and the relevant product categories; screen special KoB exceptions.
  • For registration: photo, government photo ID and conditional business-address evidence; for licensing: live FoSCoS documents matched to the selected KoB.

File through FoSCoS and maintain the correct record

Submit the application in the official FoSCoS system, monitor its reference number and answer requests via the portal. Do not treat payment or submission as issuance. Under the 2026 amendment licences/registrations have perpetual validity unless suspended, cancelled or surrendered; ongoing hygiene duties and relevant modifications remain.

  1. Identify each Chennai operating premises and confirm the applicable district and site type.
  2. Use FoSCoS eligibility by KoB and 2026 thresholds; decide Registration, State or Central, noting exceptions.
  3. Complete the appropriate application and upload required proofs; review spelling, address and food activities before payment.
  4. Keep the application reference, follow any portal query, and verify the issued certificate before representing that approval has been granted.

If turnover/category, products, KoBs, legal operator or premises change, assess the required FoSCoS modification or new-premises filing. Existing operators migrating only because of the 2026 turnover changes are covered by FSSAI’s no-fee, self-declaration-based transition guidance; do not assume unrelated changes qualify.

Official checks, service scope and cost boundaries

The 2026 FoSCoS eligibility schedule lists indicative government fees of ₹100 (registration), ₹5,000 (State) and ₹7,500 (Central), expressed as annual amounts. The 2026 FSSAI FAQ allows fees for any number of years to be paid; confirm the payable amount on the live portal. A private filing service is a separate charge, not a Chennai government fee.

A local support engagement should deliver a premises/KoB map, document-gap list, properly completed submission and trackable application reference. No consultant can guarantee approval or fixed processing days. For the wider national filing process see the national FSSAI filing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Chennai cloud kitchen need a special municipal FSSAI category?

No separate Chennai FSSAI category exists. Select the food-service/other applicable KoB for the actual kitchen and confirm turnover, products and premise address in FoSCoS. Municipal permissions, if applicable, are a separate question.

Is a Greater Chennai Corporation hawker automatically exempt?

Not every street trader is exempt. The 2026 rule deems food vendors registered under the Street Vendors Act, 2014 to be FSSAI-registered. Verify that status; applicable Schedule 4 hygiene obligations still apply.

Can a low-turnover Chennai importer choose basic registration?

Do not rely on turnover alone. The April 2026 KoB schedule lists an importer under Central licensing without a turnover threshold. Check whether the activity is legally an import operation.

Should a licence obtained before April 2026 be renewed?

FSSAI introduced perpetual validity and transition rules in 2026. Check your current status and migration on FoSCoS; do not assume an old certificate is correct merely because its prior printed expiry date has passed.

What if my shop says Chennai but the FoSCoS district or officer looks different?

Use the physical premises address and its actual administrative district. Compare the Tamil Nadu FSO directory and FoSCoS selection; seek official clarification before filing under a guessed Chennai ward.
